Slack House Farm is situated in beautiful open countryside between Hadrian’s
Wall and the southern edge of the Kielder Forest complex (in Cumbria but
bordering Northumberland) and between the Lake District National Park,
Northumberland National Park and the North Pennine Area of outstanding natural
beauty.
The views are magnificent over the Irthing Valley and the Pennines to the South, the Skiddaw range of the North Lakes to the South West, the Solway, Criffel in Galloway to the West and the Wyne Sill outcrop along which runs Hadrian’s Wall to the East.
Guests are warmly welcomed to our family farmhouse that we believe was built
by a Yeoman farmer in the Georgian period.
Twin, double or family rooms
are available to guests each with a dedicated bath or shower room.
All meals are freshly prepared using home, organic and local produce. The kettle is always on the hob and home baking available.
Slack House is a working organic farm, home to the Daisylee
pedigree herd of Ayrshire cattle and a flock of mule ewes.
We have also entered into the Countryside Stewardship Scheme through which we
are restoring dry-stone field boundaries and regenerating hedgerows and
woodland, enhancing wildlife habitats to encourage diversity of plants and
animals.
These areas are accessible to visitors by a permissive trail that links to existing bridleways. One of these is the Maiden Way linking Birdoswald Roman Fort to Bewcastle Fort via Gillalees Beacon.
The farm is set in unspoilt, open countryside adjacent to Spadeadam Forest (part of the Kielder Forest complex). Locally there’s mile upon mile of lanes, paths and tracks to follow through farmed countryside, open fell and forestry It is ideal for walking and horse riding and we are also centrally located for access to the Pennine Dales Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Lake District National Park, Northumberland National Park, the Eden Valley and the Scottish Borders.
We are on the route of Trail 15 (The Irving Valley) of the BHS North Cumbria on Horseback publication, on the B6318 approximately 2Km west of Gilsland and due north of Birdoswald Roman Fort. Our grid reference is NY613670.
